Ize Iyamu & Obaseki divide NURTW

THE governorship election has apparently
split the National Union of Road Transport

Workers (NURTW) in Edo State with two
different groups pledging support for the
two major candidates, Pastor Osagie Ize-
Iyamu of the PDP and Godwin Obaseki of
the APC.
The split became evident yesterday when
Comrade Odion Olaye a factional chairman
of the drivers’ union debunked the earlier
endorsement of Ize-Iyamu by a faction of
the union led by Comrade Warriman
Erhengbo. Erhengbo had led the state
president of the Drivers’ Welfare
Association, Comrade Sunday Eke, and 12
other local government chairmen of the
NURTW to the PDP state secretariat to
endorse Ize-Iyamu.
Dismissing the endorsement of Ize-Iyamu
yesterday, Comrade Olaye said the union is
solidly behind the Obaseki in the
forthcoming governorship election and
appealed to the state Commissioner of
Police, Chris Ezike to arrest one Mr.
Warriman Erhengbo whom he described as
an impersonator.
“I was just sworn in last month on the 2nd
as chairman of NURTW in the state, and I
have my certificate right here in my office. I
know Erhengbo as a security man at Egor.
I was sworn in by the National President,
Alhaji Najin Usman Yasin with the General
Secretary, Comrade Clement Wesco.
“After my swearing-in, we all went to pay a
courtesy visit on Governor Adams
Oshiomhole.
So I am shocked when we read about
somebody saying NURTW is supporting Ize-
Iyamu. If that impostor wants to play
politics, he should play it somewhere else.
We have said it before now that we are
backing the APC-led government in the state
because they have impacted positively on
the lives of our people.

“So we are backing Godwin Obaseki for the
governorship. And it is also not true that the
state government banned our association in
the state. We are working in collaboration
with Road Transport Employers Association
in rural areas. We have a 40/60 per cent
agreement. The governor also promised us
that the areas we are not operating on that,
that we will soon commence operation, and
we are working out the modalities” he
stated.
