It was moment of euphoria and reminiscence for families, friends and associates of late icon of radical activism, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti as they converged to mark 40th birthday of his last daughter, Lande Ransome-Kuti in Lagos over the weekend.
Lande, the last daughter of the late Medical doctor renowned for his indelible role in activism in Nigeria, marked her 40th birthday with family members, friends and late father’s associates.
The birthday occasion was emceed by prominent human rights activist, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin who relayed her moments with the Ransome-Kuti’s family during the heat of activism against military administration in the country.
While also relieving memories of their own moments with the celebrant and the family, other participants at the occasion appraised her as an example of discipline and determination.
In one of the testimonies, the family head, Dr. Dotun Ransome-Kuti reminisced how the celebrant had once thoroughly beaten him during an encounter that involved him and his younger cousin, Lande, while she was a child.
Also present at the occasion was Seun Anikulapo-Kuti, a musical art and son of renowned Afro-beat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Seun threw banters that cheered the hall. He recounted how he had made money off the celebrant’s suitors whenever they came around and asked to see her. Apparently, Lande had so many admirers, as Seun identified another family member in the hall whom he fondly referred as “partner in crime” for sharing proceeds together from bribes they extorted together from Lande’s admirers.
Another cousin of the celebrant, Mr. Kunle Anikulapo-Kuti recalled the period that his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti moved briefly to Dr. Beko’s house at Anthony Village, and he moved with his father. Kunle said he and Lande, the celebrant used to exchange pranks.
Publisher of a popular soft sell magazine, Mr. Seye Kehinde was also at Lande’s 40th birthday occasion. He cheered the celebrant with memories, praying also for her to continue to age gracefully.
Other members of the family and friends continued the testimonies, which thrilled the celebrant into endless euphoria.
The testimonies wounded into “item 7” and as the celebrant showed her skill by moving to contemporary songs and trending dance styles.
